10 from Thrissur killed

THRISSUR, DEC. 27. Ten persons from Thrissur were killed in the tidal surge at different parts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, according to reports.

An official press release from the Thrissur district administration said the deceased have been identified as Laisa, Geo, Kizhekkekodali Manoj, Areekkattu Johnson, Reshma, Leena, Samitha, Soumya, Hajira and Abi. The level of seawater rose at Munakkakkadavu, Chiplimadu and a few areas of Chettuva between 1.15 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Monday, officials said.

The district administration has warned tourists and fishermen against going to sea. Residents along the coast have been asked to stay alert.

Officials of various departments have received orders to ascertain the extent of the damage to property.
