NEW DELHI, DEC. 27. The Capital was in the grip of a major power crisis for several hours today after all the four units of the Dadri plant tripped this afternoon. The discoms were forced to resort to rotational loadshedding of nearly 500 MW across Delhi till the fault was rectified and the plant started generating electricity at about 6 p.m. Having a combined capacity of 840 MW, the Capital receives 685 MW from the Dadri plant. Unavailability of 210 MW from one unit of Badarpur plant that tripped on Sunday afternoon added to the woes. A Delhi Transco spokesperson said the situation was expected to become normal on Tuesday when the tripped Badarpur unit is expected to resume its operations. The maximum demand of electricity met today was 2,941 MW at 9 a.m, when the load shedding was just 4 MW. A senior BSES official said they had to resort to load shedding because of low frequency in the Grid and shortage of supply. The areas affected were Lajpat Nagar, Kalkaji, Govindpuri, Chittaranjan Park, Saket, Maidangarhi, Pushpa Vihar, Malviya Nagar, Tigri, Okhla, Laxmi Nagar, Patparganj, Mayur Vihar, Gagan Vihar, Anand Lok, Chandni Chowk, Pahar Ganj, Dwarka and Palam. In areas falling under the jurisdiction of North Delhi Power Limited, the discom carried out hourly load shedding. "Power cuts were because of shortage in supply of electricity from the Northern Grid and low frequency in the grid. The problem started from 9 a.m.," the NDPL said in a statement. Among the areas hit were Mangolpuri, Sultanpuri, Jahangirpuri, Ashok Vihar, Rohini, Shakti Nagar, Shalimar Bagh, Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar and Khampur. In a statement, the Delhi Jal Board said supply of water would be hit on Tuesday in Mohan Garden, Uttam Nagar, Sewak Park, Anand Vihar and Bindapur.
