`Cold deaths preventable'

NEW DELHI DEC. 27. Most deaths which takes place in India every year due to extreme cold are preventable provided the public understands a few do's and don'ts, according to K K Aggarwal, president of the Heart Care Foundation of India. He was addressing a public discussion organised at Kotla Mubarakpur slums this past weekend.

Dr. Aggarwal said deaths were common among children less than five years and people above 65 years of age. Among other things, Dr. Aggarwal said sudden exposure to cold should be avoided and one should either wear a monkey cap or put cotton in the ears and nose to keep oneself warm. Also, walking bare foot on cold ground should be avoided and wherever possible one should wear gloves to prevent exposure of the hands to extreme cold and use mufflers to cover the neck. Drinking hot cups of tea or coffee is advised at this time of the year. Also, if a person has acquired hypothermia (temperature below 96) one should rely only rectal temperature and not on oral or armpit temperature. If the temperature is low and the shivering is absent it means a medical emergency and signifies failure of body's defence mechanism to combat shivering, he added.
