LUCKNOW, DEC 27. The Uttar Pradesh government today announced a new food processing policy aimed at facilitating better returns to the farmers and attracting investment in this sector. The policy moots generating employment as also promoting value addition, minimising wastage of agri products, providing appropriate links between the agriculture and industrial sectors and marketing the products, chief secretary V.K. Mittal told reporters here. The state cabinet chaired by the Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav gave approval to the new policy, he said. In another important decision, the cabinet decided to provide relief in power and other dues of the Duncan Industry of Kanpur to pave way for getting it restarted, Mittal said adding that this would directly benefit about 1,000 employees who had been rendered jobless since the closing down of the unit in March 2002. The cabinet welcomed Uttaranchal government's decision to release Rs. 80 crore worth property belonging to the UP Housing Board, he said. The monthly pension of handicapped persons has been increased to Rs. 150 from Rs. 125, he added.
