Ammonia leak, nine hospitalised

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 27. Nine people were taken ill after they apparently inhaled ammonia leaking from an ice factory at Roop Nagar in North Delhi yesterday. While they are under observation in a hospital, the unit owner has been arrested.

According to the police, they received a call around 4-15 p.m. saying that some people living near Laxmi Ice Factory near Amba Cinema at Roop Nagar had fallen ill under mysterious circumstances. They were complaining of soar throat and burning sensation in the eyes. The police immediately arrived there and made arrangements for transportation of the nine victims to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, where they are stated to be out of danger. The police said they would be discharged soon.

Investigations revealed that there was only one worker in the ice manufacturing plant when ammonia started leaking from one of the pipelines. He and eight others residing in the area apparently inhaled the gas and fell ill. On the basis of the findings, the local police have registered a case against the unit owner, J.S. Chopra, and arrested him. The police are also checking whether Mr. Chopra had valid papers to run such a unit in that area.
