LUCKNOW, DEC 27 . Cold wave continued to sweep plains of Uttar Pradesh claiming eight more lives since last night taking the toll this season to 43 in the state. Mercury dipped to two degree Celsius in Sultanpur, the lowest this season while the biting cold winds swept large areas, met office sources here said. Eight more deaths were reported across the state with four people dying due to cold in Pratapgarh, two in Mahoba and one each in Basti and Faizabad. The minimum temperature plummeted to 4.5 Degrees in Varanasi which was about five degrees below normal as thick fog paralysed normal life adversely affecting the air, train and road traffic. Sources in the railways said that most of the trains were running behind schedule. The state government has already directed the respective district administrations to take all necessary steps for lighting bonfires and setting up temporary shelters for the homeless and poor. The government has asked the respective district magistrates to personally monitor the relief measures for the poor.
