THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 27. The Harbour Engineering and Ports Department has initiated work on clearing important navigation canals that had been blocked by damaged boats in the aftermath of the seismic sea waves. The department also issued directions to its officials to extend all assistance to the current rescue and relief operations. In a statement here today, the Cooperation and Ports Minister, M.V. Raghavan, said the department had deployed its vessels to carry out relief and rescue operations off Karunagapally and Azheekal coasts. The high frequency radio services available at the various minor ports had been put to use to reach relief. He said that vessels that were scheduled to sail from Beypore port had postponed their journeys. They have been asked to stay at port till the canal is cleared and made safe for navigation. The canal had been blocked by a boat that sank after tidal waters entered the port. He said that port officials were involved in salvaging a few boats that had been caught in the flow of the waves.
