Bungling of tax assessment alleged

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, DEC. 27. The Telugu Desam Party staged a protest at Kadiri on Monday alleging indiscriminate levying of property tax on citizens in the municipality.

Party activists led by Chand Basha, Aravind Babu and Nagamallu took out a procession, staged a rasta roko in front of the RTC bus station and a protest sit-in in front of the municipal office.

The alleged that property tax was assessed disproportionately and even poor families with semi-pucca houses were levied very high tax. They asked the municipal authorities to correct the discrepancies and extend the last date for paying the tax.

Further, they demanded waiver of property tax to families having huts and semi-pucca houses. The Municipal Commissioner later assured them to set up a cell to look into the discrepancies, if any, in assessing the tax. The issue of extending the date and waiving tax would be taken to the notice of higher-ups.
