Meena Kumari too good for Phuru Lamu

KOLLAM, DEC. 27. Asian silver medallist Meena Kumari of Haryana packed too many guns for Phuru Lamu of Sikkim in a second round bout in the 50kg class of the fifth senior National women's boxing championship at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here on Monday.

Meena Kumari outclassed her rival with a combination of straight left and right jabs before referee stopped the contest a few moments into the first round.

World champion Merycom and arch-rival V.K. Swapna braced up for their quarterfinal clash in 46kg by winning their bouts rather easily.

In view of the hartal in Kollam town, the organizers shifted the venue from Kadappakada Sports Club to the Lal Bahadur stadium. The championship will be held at the original venue from Wednesday.
