Farmers protest move to release more water

By Our Correspondent

CHAMARAJANAGAR, DEC. 27. Several farmers from the left and right bank canal areas of Suvarnavathi

Reservoir today took out a protest rally here urging the district administration not to release more water from the reservoir.

The procession, which started from the Travellers' Bungalow culminated at the Deputy Commissioner's office, where the farmers submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Harsh Gupta.

The protestors said that according to the Command Area Development Authority's (CADA) Irrigation Consultation Committee decision, water from the reservoir has already been released to facilitate the old command area farmers.

They said that sowing has been taken up in 7,000 acres in the left and right bank canals and that the reserved water would be required to save their standing crops during summer. Hence, they urged the district administration not to release water from the reservoir to old command areas.

They threatened that they would commit mass suicide if water is released from the reservoir to the old command areas.

Mr. Gupta told the protestors that he would bring the matter to the notice of the CADA office.

Farmers from Chandakavadi, Aralipura, Hebbasur, Siddaiahanapura, Dadadahalli, Attugulipura, Anchitalapura and Aiyyanapura participated in the rally.
