MYSORE, DEC. 27. Connoisseurs of arts and crafts have another occasion to rejoice. The 10-day Crafts Bazaar at JSS Mysore Urban Haath, comprising wide-ranging products representing various regions and traditions, will commence from December 31. Disclosing this to presspersons here today, the Director (Technical) JSS Mahavidyapeetha, M.H. Dhananjaya, said that the Mysore Urban Haath this year would feature over 150 products from all over India during which nearly 125 artisans would display their traditional skills. To add to the aesthetics of the bazaar, musical and cultural programmes would be organised in the evenings during the 10-day bazaar. Mr. Dhananjaya said that the Mysore Urban Haath, located on Ring Road in Hebbal Industrial Area, would have sale of handicrafts and handloom products, live demonstration of traditional techniques such as pottery, training in art and craft, besides the ever popular food court. The event that would cost nearly Rs. 2.25 crores, he said. The Central Government would sponsor Rs. 1.7 crores, while the State Government had released Rs. 30 lakhs. The rest would be borne by the JSS Mahavidyapeetha, he said.
Products
Among the popular products expected to be showcased include saris, rosewood and sandalwood carvings, jute craft, filgree work, foot wear, lampshades, gem and beed ornaments and other rare art and crafts. The bazaar will be open to the public between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on all days, and the entry is free. While the Crafts Bazaar evoked mixed response last year, the organisers are expecting better participation from the public this time, Mr. Dhananjaya said. Nearly 70,000 people visited the bazaar last year generating a business of nearly Rs. 25 lakhs. Exuding confidence that the bazaar would become self-reliant by next year, he said that permanent structures would come up within eight months. Training of students would be theme based and region based, he said. The Vice-chancellor of Karnataka State Open University, K. Sudha Rao, will inaugurate the bazaar and the Deputy Commissioner, Kumar G. Naik, will participate in the inaugural function.
MoU signed
Mr. Dhananjaya said that the JSS Mahavidyapeetha had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AEC Offshore Training Company, Australia, for imparting training as forward linkage in promoting art and crafts. Similarly, the company had identified over 2,500 products worldwide. To make the MoU effective, the Mahavidyapeetha would provide backward linkages by providing training to high school students of Suttur School in selected arts and crafts, he said. The students would be given a choice to choose the art and craft of their choice once they completed the high school, he added.
