9,724 to receive degrees at Kuvempu varsity convocation

SHIMOGA, DEC. 27. Sayed Haroon of the Civil Engineering section of U.B.D.T. Technical College, Davangere, who has bagged the highest number of five gold medals, will receive them at the 15th annual convocation of Kuvempu University at Jnana Sahyadri on Tuesday.

The Governor and Chancellor of the university, T.N. Chaturvedi, who will preside over the convocation, will give away the gold medals, certificates and degrees to the students and researchers.

Those who have won three gold medals each are K. Dhareshwar of Lalitakala Mahavidyalaya, Davangere; B.N. Tejas of Jnana Sahyadri, Shankarghatta; M. Nikeshkumar of Acharya Tulasi National Commerce College, Shimoga; S. Prakash Pai of U.B.D.T. Technical College, Davangere; and Nazia Amjam and B. Venna of Jnana Sahyadri, Shankarghatta.

Sixteen students (six men and 10 women) have won two gold medals each, while16 other students have won one gold medal each.

The winners of the gold medals and cash awards are: A.N. Gurucharan, K. Ramesh, Shivakumar Tambarahalli, Ganesh K. Dhareshwar, G. Savitha, Nazia Amjam, K. Sharada Shenoy, and R.B. Vasanthkumari.

The total number of degrees that will be conferred on the students at the convocation is 9,724.

The number of B.A. degree is the highest (4,447) while there is only one successful candidate in B. Pharma.

Doctorates

Of the seven candidates who will be conferred the doctorates this year four are men and three women.

Mathoor Krishnamurthy, executive director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore, will be conferred the D. Litt., and S. Kotrappa, a lawyer from Davangere will be honoured with L.L.D.

Gulbarga varsity

The 23rd convocation of Gulbarga University will be held at the outdoor stadium of the university on the main campus on the city outskirts on December 30.

The Registrar of the university, S. Rajanna, said in a press release here today that the Chief Justice of India, R.C. Lahoti, will deliver the convocation address, and the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, who is also the Chancellor of the university, will preside over the function. The Pro-Chancellor and Higher Education Minister, D. Manjunath, will be present.

Mr. Rajanna said that of the total 14,820 candidates qualified to receive degrees, 1,500 will be receive them in person and 204 in absentia.

Forty-five persons will be awarded Ph.D. degree, 69 will receive gold medals and 12 will receive cash prizes for their achievement.
