NAGERCOIL, DEC. 27. The Government will extend all assistance to fishermen who lost not only their kith and kin but also valuable property, said the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa. After consoling relatives of the victims of Sunday's disaster, gathered on the premises of St.Xavier's and Assisi churches here on Monday, she said her government will take immediate steps to provide fishing boats and other implements so that they could undertake their vocation. Necessary steps will be taken to ensure rehabilitation measures, including re-construction of houses in coastal areas. She said a sum of Rs. 1 lakh per family would be given as relief. When the affected fishermen demanded food on seeing her, she assured them that the Collector would do the needful, including provision of food and shelter. Later she visited Asaripallam Government Medical College Hospital and enquired about the health of the injured fishermen. When one Martin of Melamanakudi told her that he had lost all his property, the Chief Minister assured him assistance. The Chief Minister was very much moved and could not control her tears when the affected men and women wept in unison shouting `Amma'. She landed at the Nagercoil Armed Reserve police grounds at 12.20 p.m. and headed straight to St.Xaiver's church to console the victims. She left Nagercoil an hour later. Earlier, the Health Minister, N.Thalavai Sundaram, the Collector, Ramesh Chand Meena, the Deputy Inspector General, Gopalakrishnan, and MLAs received the Chief Minister at the helipad.
