CHENNAI, DEC. 27. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M.Karunanidhi, who was admitted to a private hospital here last night for acute back pain, is likely to be discharged in a few days. "He is on conservative treatment. His condition is stable," N.Sathyabhama, director, medical services, Apollo Hospitals, said today. Mr.Karunanidhi has a history of back pain. He was earlier advised not to travel long distance by car. He was up all day on Sunday watching the developments after the tsunami hit the Indian coast. This aggravated back pain, necessitating hospitalisation.
Rumours about health
Shops and business establishments in many parts of Chennai downed the shutters following rumours about Mr.Karunanidhi's health. The rumours led to clashes in a few districts between supporters of the DMK and others, police sources said. The DMK treasurer, Arcot N.Veerasamy, accused political rivals and the police of spreading the rumours and condemned the depth to which the rivals had stooped. He dispelled concerns over the DMK chief's health and made a statement about his back pain.
