Nagapattinam
By Our Staff Reporter
NAGAPATTINAM, DEC. 27. The Nagapattinam district administration took effective steps and restored power supply in several areas last night and work is on in other places. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited officials are taking steps to restore the communication facility as landlines went dead as seawater gushed into the telephone exchange on the beach road yesterday. However, phones in some areas were restored this afternoon, according to BSNL officials. Five to six feet of water had gushed inside the Customs, Port Trust and other offices located on beach road and damaged official records. The police housing corporation flats and houses located about one-km from the seashore were inundated. A large number of people were taking refuge in marriage halls, schools, temples and in the Collectorate. Taking advantage of the tragedy, thieves laid their hands on the locked flats and houses and took away the jewels and other valuables. The theft could not be reported to the police as they were engaged in security and relief work.
