MANGALORE, DEC. 27. Virasat 2005, a national festival organised by Alvas' Education Foundation will begin on January 4. This being its decennial year, the foundation is all set to celebrate the festival in a big way. The president of the foundation, Mohan Alva, told presspersons here on Monday that the festival will begin with a concert by the renowned Ghazal singer Anup Jalota. Mr. Jalota will sing bhajans, ghazals, geets and film songs. The Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, Veerendra Heggade, will inaugurate the programme. K. Abhayachandra Jain, MLA; the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, Aloysius Paul D'Souza; and the former Minister K. Amarnath Shetty will be present.
Events
On January 5, the programmes are: Hindustani classical vocal and Sant Vani by Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar of Pune and Rang, a variety of dance forms ranging from Darbari Kathak and Tumri to Geethopadesh by Arjun Mishra and team from Kathak Academy, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. On January 6, T.M. Krishna from Chennai will give a Carnatic classical concert followed by Gujarati folk dances such as Dandiya, Garbha, Bhavai, sword dance and so on. On January 7, the sitar artiste Shujaat Husain Khan, son of the renowned sitar player Vilayat Khan, will perform. Bhaav Raag Taal, a blend of Kathak and Bharatanatyam, will be performed by Nirupama Rajendra and a team from Abhinava Arts Centre. On January 8, Swara Laya Laasya, a tala vadya concert by 12 artists will be held, followed by Purulia Chhou Dance, a folk dance of West Bengal, by Chinibas Mahato and his team from Sitalpur, West Bengal. On the last day, a Sugama Sangeet programme by renowned singers will be held. Manipuri Jagoi Marup, a blend of Manipuri classical and folk dances, will also be held. The venue for the six-day programme is Shobhavana, a medicinal and botanical garden owned by the foundation at Mijar in the Dakshina Kannada district.
