By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 27. To help the tidal wave victims, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi today decided to donate Rs. 4 crores to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. The MCD would also send two medical and sanitation teams, besides relief material like cloths and edible items, to the affected areas.

The decisions were taken at a meeting held here this evening. Besides the Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, the Delhi Mayor, A. R. Verma, the Leader of the House, Satbir Singh, and the MCD Standing Committee Chairman, Mukesh Goel, attended the meeting.

It was decided that all municipal employees would donate a day's salary while the Municipal Councillors would donate one month's stipend. All this is likely to gross Rs. 3 crores, and Rs. 1 crore would be contributed from the civic body's own fund, Mr. Mehta said.

Following the meeting, Mr. Mehta instructed all the 12 Deputy Commissioners to start collecting relief material like cloths and edible items from the resident welfare associations and market associations in their areas. "These would be packed by the Zones and delivered to the Home Ministry so that it could be despatched to affected areas at the earliest," he said.

Mr. Mehta said, the MCD also constituted two medical teams having 10 members each. The civic body also set up two sanitation teams of 25-member each. The Leader of House, Satbir Singh, said a team of Councillors would also visit the affected areas to access the nature of devastation and the amount of relief material to be sent.
