MADURAI, DEC.27. Various organisations in the district have come forward to donate to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund for rehabilitating tsunami-affected people in the State. The Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association has decided to contribute Rs. one lakh, as first instalment, to the fund. According to its president, S. Aravind, the decision to give the sum was taken at an executive committee meeting of the association today. The amount would be apportioned and sent to the Collectors of Cuddalore and Nagapattinam, which bore the brunt of tsunami fury. He appealed to the association members, other small-scale industrialists and members of the public to contribute their mite in kind or cash for the relief. The contribution with the donors' names and addresses could be sent to the MADITSSIA office on Dr. Ambedkar Road, near Madurai Corporation, and this would be compiled and sent to the relief camps, Mr. Aravind said. The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed its resolve to extend all possible assistance within its limitations to rehabilitate the victims and their family members. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Engineers' Sangam has offered to contribute Rs.50,000 towards the relief. In addition, nearly 7000 members of the sangam have come forward to donate their one-day pay towards the relief. The sangam has appealed to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to deduct the sum accordingly from the salary for the month of December, according to the president, R. Govindarajan. The head of Madurai Adheenam, Gurugnanasambanda Desika Paramacharya, has announced a donation of Rs.one lakh towards rehabilitation of the people affected by tsunami in the State. The Tamil Nadu Government Employees Union has urged the State Government to deduct one-day's pay from the salary of its employees as contribution for rehabilitating the affected people. The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants' Association has decided to donate Rs.50,000 towards the CM's relief fund. The president of Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council, Most. Rev. Peter Fernando, has expressed the council's commitment to assist the Government in rehabilitating the tsunami-affected persons across the State. Already, the Caritas India has pledged to provide Rs. one crore towards the CM's relief fund and the Catholic Relief Services has assured to contribute Rs.50 lakhs, he said.
