MANGALORE, DEC. 27. The Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Oscar Fernandes, has clarified that the State Government will decide on extending reservation to nomadic tribes based on the recommendations of a Backward Classes Committee. Speaking to The Hindu here on Monday, Mr. Fernandes said there is no second thought about the extension of reservation for nomadic tribes, semi-nomadic tribes and de-notified nomadic tribes. Since the committee is yet to give its recommendations, the nature of reservation cannot be determined. Mr. Fernandes said reservation should help guarantee livelihood for nomadic tribes to sustain their society in its original form. Educating their children, social uplift programmes and other socio-economic benefits should be meticulously planned and implemented. In a status report prepared by S.V. Amin, member of the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, it is stated that there is no uniform list in the State for the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes. Mr. Amin, who told The Hindu about the findings of the commission, said it is necessary to extend facilities contemplated under the Plan scheme to these tribes. The Mangalore convention of nomadic tribes has recommended that uniformity of law is a must, he added.
