Appu remanded to judicial custody till January 3

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, DEC. 27. Appu, a prime accused in the Sankararaman murder case, was today lodged in the Cuddalore prison at the expiry of his police custody.

The Kancheepuram judicial magistrate-I, G. Uthamaraj issued a warrant for detention in judicial custody till January 3, 2005, after recording Appu's reply to questions whether he was harassed and whether he was provided food and medical attention or not during police custody.

When counsel demanded that their client be provided with A-Class accommodation in the prison, the magistrate said there was no provision in the Criminal Procedure Code to issue a direction that a remand prisoner be given A-Class accommodation.

It was up to jail authorities to decide, he said and asked counsel to forward a petition to them.

The court also extended up to January 10, 2005 the judicial custody of five "fake" accused — "Dil" Pandian, Sathish, Arumugam, Arun and Devarajan — arrested in connection with this murder case.
