HYDERABAD, DEC. 27. The quality of engineering education in the State could be improved by addressing the problem of shortage of qualified faculty and making higher education affordable to all the deserving students, said the Chairman of State Council for Higher Education, K.C. Reddy. Prof. Reddy gave away medals and cash awards to the top rankers of Osmania University College of Engineering for the academic year 2003-04 at the Annual Academic Awards function here on Monday. The engineering college with its impressive track record could play an important role in shaping engineering education by producing more post-graduates for teaching profession, he opined. In the context of industry claiming that majority of engineering graduates were unemployable, the quality of education and training being provided in engineering colleges needed to be improved, Prof. Reddy said. Noting that of 239 engineering colleges with 82,000 seats, there was demand only for about 60,000 seats, he said the demand could be increased by improving the quality and relevance of engineering education. Many colleges in rural areas did not have adequate faculty and the training given was not to the requirements of global market.
Distinction
The engineering college Principal, R. Ramesh Reddy, said the college was selected for the World Bank's Technical Quality Improvement Programme and it would lead to a new work culture in the college in the coming years. He said of 320 engineering students of their college, a record 250 students found placements this year with reputed organisations. The Chairman, governing body of the college, V. Raghavan, presided. The following are some of the top rankers in various branches of engineering: T. Pramod (civil engineering), B. Sudheer Kumar, (mechanical), Balaji Jayaraman (ECE), Jaya Deepti (EEE), Laveeta Joseph (biomedical engineering), B. Meher Adithya (CSE), Balaji Jayaraman (ECE). It was interesting to see some parents collecting medals on behalf of their children who are pursing higher studies abroad.
