Row over `outsiders' in Telugu varsity

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, DEC 27. Students of Potti Sriramulu Telugu University have objected to the entry of `outsiders' to their hostel premises and accused some student organisations from Osmania University of vitiating the atmosphere with caste politics.

The students were reacting to the developments in the hostel on Sunday where two groups of students had an argument over the unveiling of the portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Phule.

Complaint lodged

The incident led to a group of students lodging a complaint with the police that they were abused by their caste. Police are enquiring into the complaint.

Some students opposed the idea arguing that portraits of N.T. Rama Rao, founder of the university, and other national leaders should also be put in the hostel along with portraits of Ambedkar and Mahatma Phule.

"Never an incident of this kind happened in the hostel and some students from Osmania University are behind the entire episode," said a student of fine arts.

"How can we abuse anyone by caste when we are aware of the SC & ST Atrocities Act", questioned a student belonging to the Backward Classes. "Moreover, we have been living like brothers without knowing castes."

Interestingly, those opposing the idea also included students from Scheduled Castes as well as Backward Classes. "Some people are using our caste to settle their personal scores. They have no right to enter our university first," said an SC student.

Altercation

Gabriel, Warden of the Triveni Hostel, who was witness to the argument between the two groups, said no one was abused by his or her caste. The presence of some outsiders was what angered the hostel inmates and led to the altercation. Meanwhile, the Telugu University Registrar, A. Guru Murthy, said he would look into the issue.
