HYDERABAD, DEC. 27. The city based couple -- C. Suseelamma and Venkateswara Rao -- who allegedly cheated several people of over Rs. 2.5 crores by luring them to invest in their chit fund business, were taken into custody by the Central Crime Station on Monday. The accused surrendered before the Guntur police recently. As news about their custody in the CCS spread, scores of investors, who were duped by the couple descended on the office of DCP, Detective Department, Amit Garg, and demanded a comprehensive probe into the case. The couple mostly targeted their neighbours in Chaderghat. "I invested Rs. 1 lakh in the chits so that I could later get the amount for my daughters marriage scheduled for January 13. Now, what will I do," a weeping Shantamma told reporters outside the DCP's office. Like her, a retired Deputy Director with Municipal Administration, T. Venkateswara Rao, invested Rs. 4 lakhs with Suseelamma. "Our family knew them for the last 10 years and therefore we believed them. I never thought things would turn this bad," he said. Similarly, an agitated Suguna said that she along with her brothers and sisters had invested Rs. 4 lakhs. The police began the process of recovering property owned by the accused.
