THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 27. As many as 950 families living in the coastal areas of the district have been shifted to relief camps in the wake of the tidal wave threat, according to a press release quoting the additional district magistrate, V. Prabhakaran Nair. Some 500 families have been housed in the Pozhiyoor St. Mathew's High School and the Pozhiyoor Government Upper Primary School. Some 450 families had earlier been shifted to the Vizhinjam Harbour Upper Primary School. A total of 8,000 persons are in relief camps at present. Food, water, illumination and sanitation facilities are being provided in the camps, the release said, adding that a medical team had visited the camps and taken precautionary measures against epidemics. The District Collector, Tinku Biswal, has asked the officials concerned to ensure that relief measures are undertaken. The tahsildars would be responsible for providing food, water and illumination in the camps.
KWA arrangement
The Kerala Water Authority has made arrangements for reaching drinking water to the disaster relief camps in the various districts. The following are the telephone numbers to be contacted: Thiruvananthapuram - 2328992; Kollam - 2745293; and Alappuzha - 2242372.
IMA sets up cell
The Indian Medical Association has set up a State-level disaster relief cell with its south zone vice-president, G. Vijayakumar, as coordinator. The local units of the cell were at work in Karunagappally, Chavara, Thrikkunnappuzha, Cherthala, Kollam and Vizhinjam. Those who wish to donate clothes for the disaster victims should contact the IMA relief cell (phone: 0471-2463514 or 0471-2575630). The Federation of Residents' Associations Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) has started collecting clothes for the victims. Those interested in making contributions should contact the secretary, Punchakkary Ravi (phone: 2474745). The Kerala Municipal & Corporation Staff Union will undertake a State-wide fund collection on December 30 for helping the disaster victims, according to a press release quoting its secretary, C. J. Thomas.
