This Day That Age
The new Council of Ministers for U.P., headed by Dr. Sampurnanand, was sworn in at Raj Bhavan in Lucknow on December 28. The Governor, Mr. K.M. Munshi, administered the oath of office and secrecy to the Chief Minister and his colleagues. Acharya Jugal Kishore, Vice-Chancellor of the Lucknow University, the only new Minister taken in the Cabinet, has been given in addition to Labour the new portfolio of Social Welfare. Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh Legislature gave a touching farewell to Pandit G.B. Pant, on the eve of his laying down office as the State Chief Minister to take up his new appointment in the Central Cabinet early next week. The two Houses of Legislature, which met separately, deferred the day's business to enable their members to pay tributes to Pandit Pant, who had been associated with them for over two decades as a member and for ten years as Leader of the Lower House. Hafiz Mohammed Ibrahim, Finance Minister, who spoke first in both the Houses, described Pandit Pant as the architect of modern U.P. and a person dedicated to the service of the State and his country. He praised his services both as the U.P. Chief Minister and in the forefront of the struggle for national freedom. In his reply Mr. Pant said he was overwhelmed by the display of love and sympathy of the members.
