Medical teams despatched to Tamil Nadu

BANGALORE, DEC. 28. The State Government continued doing its bit to mitigate the sufferings and losses suffered by Tamil Nadu and other States ravaged by Sunday's tsunami.

The Health Minister, Cheluvaraya Swamy, told presspersons today that as requested by the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, four medical teams have been despatched to Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and other places with medical supplies worth Rs. 1 lakh each. (PTI reports that the teams comprise 15 members each — five doctors and 10 nurses drawn from the Victoria, Bowring, K.C. General, and Jayanagar government hospitals.)

Medicines worth Rs. 5 lakhs have been sent to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, along with a team, he said and added that private hospitals and nursing homes that volunteered to send teams and medicines can approach the Government for transportation.

The Victoria Hospital has sent a team of nine medical specialists, 10 nurses and two paramedical personnel to provide relief for the people affected by the tsunami in Nagapattinam. The team, which has taken medicines, is expected to stay in the district for a week or more, according to K.S. Siddaraj, Medical Superintendent of Victoria Hospital.
