Mufti visits interior Srinagar

SRINAGAR, DEC. 28. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, undertook an extensive tour of Srinagar and took stock of the problems faced by people.

The J&K Minister of State for Industries and Commerce, Raman Mattoo, Divisional Commissioner Khurshid Ahmad Ganai and Inspector General of Police Javed Makhdoomi accompanied Mr. Sayeed.

The Chief Minister visited Shereen Bagh, Nawab Bazar, Jamalatta, Aali Kadal, Zaina Kadal, Khanqah-e-Moalla, Fateh Kadal, Bab Demb, Zaindar Mohalla, Kani Kadal, Tankipora, Shaheed Ganj and Barbar Shah.

He also visited Sonawar, Athwajan, Nowgam Bypass, Tangpora, Moominabad Batamaloo, Parimpora and Bemina situated uptown and in the city periphery. At the famous 14th century Shrine of Khanqah-e-Moalla in the heart of the city, the Chief Minister issued instructions to acquire adjacent houses to expand the shrine premises, and paid obeisance at the shrine.

He assured that the building would be refurbished to accommodate more devotees particularly during congregations. He told them that the government had formulated a project for the beautification of the shrine complex that would be implemented soon.

He said similar projects would be taken up in the Hazratbal shrine and Jama Masjid.

Reviving old memories, Mufit Sayeed visited the house in Aali Kadal where he had spent his student days and met with its family members. Senior citizens of the area fondly recollected the days the Chief Minister spent there. The Chief Minister also visited the shrine of Hazrat Syed Mohammad Amin Mantaqi Owaisi, popularly known as Woosi Sahab and paid obeisance there.

At Zaina Kadal, the local shopkeepers informed the Chief Minister that with the closure of the old wooden bridge their business was badly affected. A new Zaina Kadal has already been constructed and opened for traffic a short distance away. The Chief Minister asked the Divisional Commissioner to see what could be done to help the affected shopkeepers.

The Chief Minister inspected the road-widening project at Shaheed Ganj and asked the divisional administration to use funds already allotted.

He also visited the building of the Government Dental College at Shereen Bagh, currently under construction. The building, coming up at a cost of Rs 19 crore, would house clinical departments of the college.

He urged the construction agency to complete the project soon. He also ordered alternate living arrangements of handloom weavers families housed in the college premises.

Mufti Sayeed inspected the Brari Nambal cut at Fateh Kadal. The project is vital for restoration of Bab Demb water body. The concerned engineer assured him it would be completed by June next. The Chief Minister said that he would personally monitor the pace of work.

At Bemina, the Chief Minister visited the residential quarters for employees of the Accountant Generals office and told the concerned officers to complete construction of the quarters by March next. He said the employees would be moved to the new accommodation so that the hotels premises are vacated by them. The Chief Minister also inspected the truck terminal and infrastructure facilities coming up for transport agencies at Parimpora. The Srinagar Development Authority is laying roads for the terminal that would be completed within three months. The Chief Minister instructed immediate shifting of the transport agencies to the new site. The fruit sellers at the fruit mandi informed him about their problems. He assured that their genuine problems would be looked into. During his visit of Moominabad, the Chief Minister asked the district administration to ensure vacation of all encroachments on the Kahcharai land in the area. Mufti Sayeed also visited the upcoming G B Pant Hospital at Sonawar and inquired about the ongoing work. He asked the Managing Director, JKPCC to ensure its completion by April next and said it would be commissioned on April 30,2005.

The Chief Minister expressed displeasure at the delay in the commissioning of the Athwajan Truck Terminal and regional bus stand for south Kashmir. He was assured that it would be completed in three months.

The Chief Minister asked the Divisional Commissioner to monitor the work and ensure its completion within the targeted three months period.

He said if any problem arose concerning the early completion of the project it would be resolved. He said he would take up with the army the garbage dumping at the site and look for an alternate place. He also met stone chiselers and asked the Divisional Commissioner to look into their problems.
