GULBARGA, DEC. 28. Renowned paediatrician and former director of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, B.G. Benakappa, will be awarded the Dr. P.S. Shankar Vaidyashree Award on January 1 at the fifth anniversary celebrations of the Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratishthan in the city. The trustees of the pratishthan, S.S. Hiremath and P.M. Biradar, along with the vice-president, S.S. Patil, told presspersons here on Tuesday that Sri Mahantswamy of Vijaya Mahantesh Samasthan Mutt, Chittargi in Ilkal, will attend the function. The Vice-Chancellor of the Kannada University, B.A. Vivek Rai, will be the chief guest and industrialist, S.S. Patil, will preside over the function. Senior obstetrician and gynaecologist, Padmini Prasad, who is also the director of the Institute of Sexual Medicine, and Na. Someshwar, well-known medical science writer in Kannada, will be awarded for their books, Laingika Aarogya and Elu Suttina Koteyalli Entu Koti Bhantaru respectively. All the three award winners would be felicitated, they said. Mr. Hiremath said that the Mahantaswamy would also distribute the cheque containing the scholarship from October to January to the first year medical student, Kumari Siddaganga Renukant Sangavi, who has been selected to receive the monthly scholarship of Rs. 1,000 for the entire course period this year. The pratishthan would also release new books on medicine written in Kannada. Ellallu Kanuva Kayilegalu written by D.K. Mahabalaraju, and three volumes of Advances in Medicine and a medicial dictionary written by P.S. Shankar, would be released, he added.
