SHIMOGA, DEC. 28. Former Chairman of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and former director of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, R. Natarajan, said on Tuesday that the new millennium provided a convenient signpost with reference to which the past could be reviewed, the present assessed, and the future contemplated upon. He said that learning with technology had to start by educating the teachers. Teachers had become facilitators in the new scenario. He said that one of the distinctive features of new educational technologies would be opportunities provided for individual, self-paced learning that catered to the individual learner's abilities and aptitude and the possibility of one-to-one interaction with the teachers. He said that engineering provided the technical means enabling mobility and the ability to carry out processes at a global level. Prof. Natarajan said that international competition in higher education had served to include internationalisation as a measure of quality. The Governor and Chancellor, T.N. Chaturvedi, who presided over the function, conferred degrees on the new graduates and post-graduates. He also gave away gold medals and certificates to the rank winners, and Ph.D. degrees. The Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor of the university, D. Manjunath, was present. The Vice-Chancellor, K. Chidananda Gowda, outlined the progress of the university since its inception and spoke about the new projects.
