PUDUKOTTAI, DEC.28 . The advantages of bee keeping were explained to a section of farmers and members of self-help groups. Inaugurating a training programme organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Vamban recently, S. Jebaraj, Professor and Head, National Pulses Research Centre, Vamban, said the per capita intake of honey in developed countries like the US was 1000 gm per annum whereas it was below two to three gm in India. K. Samiayyan from Agricultural Entomology Department explained the role of bees in pollination especially in cross-pollinated crops resulting in 25-30 per cent increased yield. G. Srinivasan, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Entomology), trained the beneficiaries in various aspects of bee keeping. Bee keeping was a profitable venture requiring very little space and investment. Marginal and small farmers, landless labourers could opt for this business.
