TIRUCHI, DEC. 28. The district administration, in association with philanthropists and industrialists, has despatched one lakh food packets and 50,000 water packets to the tidal wave victims in coastal districts. Food was prepared at various places in hygienic environs with the help of industrial houses, which have provided rice, vegetables and cooking materials. Food packets were despatched to Nagapattinam through lorries, under the supervision of revenue and police department officials. The Collector, V. Pandian, said that the despatching process would continue. Responding to an appeal from the Nagapattinam district authorities for sanitary workers, the administration has drawn workers from the Manapparai Municipality. To meet the demand for earthmovers and cranes, the administration was coordinating with the departments of Public Works, Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, and the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. The district supplied 3,000 shawls and 10,000 readymade garments for children, provided by two city-based textile houses. Five lorries were kept ready to rush materials in case of emergencies. Meanwhile, 50 young girls between 6-12 age group of Akkaraipatti in Nagapattinam district sought refuge in a Sri Lankan repatriate camp at Kottapattu in the city. The Collector directed the District Social Welfare Department to accommodate them at Mathur Orphanage. They were provided with food and clothes. Medical teams, including specialists, especially orthopaedicians, were deputed to the Thanjavur Medical College. The Tiruchi Corporation sent two consignments of relief materials to the affected people. The first consignment consisted of three water tanker lorries, two lorries and 60 sanitary workers, and 50 bags (25 kg each) of bleaching powder. The second consignment comprised a porcelain equipment, 244 bags of rice mobilised from philanthropists and traders, 110 bags of vegetables and groceries, 1,000 food packets, and 4,000 packets of chappatis besides edible oil, rava, dresses and 8,000 drinking water packets. The Corporation employees have decided to donate a day's salary to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors' Association, and the Tamil Nadu Local Fund Audit Officers' Association have donated a day's salary to the CM's Relief Fund. The Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai has decided to mobilise funds and donate it to the CM's Relief Fund. The Tamil Nadu Arundhathiyar Nalasangam, the Deccan Consumer Rights Protection Council, and the Human Rights Voluntary Associations have extended their moral and material support to the victims. The Human Rights Protection Centre, Tamil Nadu, has formed teams to ensure that the relief materials reached the victims.
Perambalur
The Perambalur district administration has appealed to philanthropists and the public to donate generously to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund, Chennai, by way of demand drafts. The Collector, T. Vivekanandan, has asked the heads of institutions to collect money from students. Five medical teams, comprising nine doctors and 50 staff, were sent to the affected areas. Employees of all Government departments have donated a day's salary to the CM's Relief Fund, he added.
Karur
The Lakshmi Vilas Bank has despatched relief materials such as ration provisions, treated water, shirts, dhotis, saris, medicines, IV fluids and bread loaves to the tsunami affected people in the Nagapattinam region. Its Chairman, A. Krishnamurthy, handed over the relief materials worth Rs. 50,000 to the Collector, G. Ramamoorthy, here today. The executives of the bank have decided to donate their one-day salary to the CM's Relief Fund. The bank has also sent a team to assist in the distribution of relief. Three lorry loads of relief material including over 10,000 food packets were despatched through the efforts of the Ayyappa Seva Sangam. Over 200 policemen including officers have been sent to the tsunami-hit regions to take part in the relief operations.
