Seismic sea waves: 135 seek medical treatment

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, DEC. 28. In all, 135 persons in the district who have been affected by the tidal surge along the coast have sought medical treatment, according to the District Medical Officer.

The condition of these patients is not serious.

In view of the possibility of the outbreak of infectious diseases, people have been asked to stay alert. Health officials called for high standards of hygiene.

Stale food should be avoided. Drinking water should be boiled, officials said.

Medical teams have been constituted and despatched to different parts. Meetings would be held at several places on Wednesday to discuss the rehabilitation of the evacuees.

The bodies of the 11 persons from Thrissur, killed in the tidal surge at different parts of Tamil Nadu, have been cremated.

Thousands of panic-stricken people who rushed to relief camps at Kodungallur, Chavakkad, Valappad and Chettuva late last night, following reports of the possibility of another tidal surge, went back to their homes this morning, officials said.

A telephone call from an unidentified person to a house in Thalapilly saying that the area would feel seismic tremors in a few hours gave the local residents a scare last night.

An official press release from the district administration, quoting the Met Centre, said that the sea would be choppy in the next 24 hours. Fishermen and tourists have been warned against going to sea.
