TUMKUR, DEC. 28. Yesudas Alphonse; his wife, Arokya Mary Lata; and their children, Swetha Mary, Sowmya Mary, and Stefi Mary, of Shantinagar here, returned today from their Christmas trip to Velankanni in Tamil Nadu. Eyewitnesses to the Sunday morning disaster caused by the tsunami, they said they owed their safe return to god. They were guests at the Velankanni Church, where they attended the annual Christmas Mass. Ms. Lata said she spotted waves which were unusually high when she came out to dry clothes. In seconds, the waves struck the church and water gushed in. When the water level rose, she and her husband put one child on a windowsill and held the other two aloft. When water receded, they saw bodies outside the church compound. Mr. Alphonse said even as they were scrambling to safety, another wave hit the building, but the water receded swiftly. They ran nearly 5 km from the church and boarded a bus. The children are yet to recover from the trauma and cannot talk about the incident.
