Bodies of three pilgrims reach Mysore

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, DEC. 28. The bodies of three of the seven persons from Mysore who were reported missing in Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, in the wake of the deadly tsunami tidal waves, were brought here this morning.

The bodies of Peter Johnson (43), an employee of the Railway Workshop at Ashokapuram, and Clifford Joseph (12), student in St. Joseph High School, were brought in a private vehicle from Velankanni in Nagapattinam. The body Triveni (17), who was a domestic help, was handed over to her relatives from T. Narsipur, near here.

The coffins containing the bodies of Johsnon and Clifford were taken to the Catholic burial ground in Gandhinagar, where the Bishop of Mysore, Thomas K. Vazzhipillai, conducted the funeral mass in the presence of a large number of mourners.

According to relatives of the dead, Johnson and Clifford were part of a 23-member group which left Mysore on Friday on a pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Our Lady of Velankanni in Nagapattinam. On Sunday morning, several members of the group, including children, went to the seashore to see the sunrise, and they were washed away by the waves.

Four children missing

Thirteen members of the group, who had decided against going to the seashore, returned to Mysore on Monday. Three persons who were injured were undergoing treatment in a hospital in Thanjavur. Four children have not been traced.

Ronald, a relative, told The Hindu that the missing children are between five and 12 years of age. They are Manavitha, daughter of Samson; Cheryll, daughter of Johnson; Arpitha, daughter of Antony Raj; and Nikita, daughter of Sunil Raj.

Ronald said friends and relatives were in Velankanni to trace the children.
