NEKRTC wins award

GULBARGA Dec. 28. The North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) has won an award instituted by the Petroleum Conservation and Research Association (PCRA) for achieving optimum mileage in 2003-04. A communication in this regard to the NEKRTC from the Ministry of Surface Transport today said the corporation has been selected for the award for achieving a mileage of 5.38 km per litre, which is the highest achieved by any transport corporation in the country. The Managing Director of the NEKRTC, Gangaram Baderia, said the award, which comprises a cash prize and a trophy, will be presented at a function in New Delhi in February or March next year. The NEKRTC saved 31.76 lakh litres of fuel and Rs. 7.30 crores in cash by achieving the optimum mileage.

`Set up procurement centres'

Bangalore Dec. 28. The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa, has criticised the Government for its "failure" to set up centres for procuring paddy in Shimoga, Koppal, Gangavati and Davanagere districts. In a statement to the press, he said the number of maize procurement centres should be increased as farmers are facing transportation problems in many villages. The existing centres should be kept open till January-end. The Government should immediately pay minimum support price to farmers, he added.

Deputy Commissioner criticised

Bangalore Dec. 28. The Janata Dal (U) MLA from Bharama Sagara, H. Anjaneya, has, in a letter to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, urged him to stop issuing Scheduled Caste (SC) certificates to members of the Mogaveera and Mogera communities, which are engaged in fishing in Uttara Kannada district. Quoting newspaper reports, Mr. Anjaneya said the District Caste Inspection Committee, led by Ritesh Kumar Singh, has decided to issue SC certificates to 17 Mogaveeras. The Mera and Mogera groups should not be mistaken for the Mogaveeras, called Mogeras in some places, he said. Criticising the Deputy Commissioner of the district for issuing SC certificates to Mogaveeras, he said it will not stand the test of legal scrutiny. The official should be transferred. He should also be dealt with under Section 4 of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Atrocities Act, Mr. Anjaneya demanded.

Bank meeting

MYSORE DEC. 28. The regional office of Canara Bank reviewed the performance of its branches recently and reiterated its commitment to enhance customer satisfaction.

Over 50 officers and senior staff members of the bank, including branch managers, senior managers and chief managers, attended the meeting.

S.T. Ramachandra, senior manager of the regional office, welcomed the gathering.

The assistant general manager, L.S. Dinamani, spoke on the performance of the bank in the region. The general manager, Annappayya, delivered the presidential address and told the officers to extend loans to farmers.

He also advised the officials to ensure a "complaint-free" atmosphere in the branches.

Appeal

MYSORE DEC. 28. The Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed grief over the devastation in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India by the tsunami and appealed to its members to contribute liberally for the rehabilitation of the affected.

It has called on traders and businessmen to donate liberally.

Elected

MYSORE DEC. 28. Sundar Raj has been elected president of Rotary Central Mysore for 2005-06.

The other office-bearers are Jayaprakash (president elect), Nagesh (honorary secretary), K.A. Bernard (joint secretary), Rashmi Gandhi (treasurer) and Ashok Udupa (sergeant-at-arms).

In addition, six other members have been elected to the board of directors.

Quiz contest

MANGALORE DEC. 28. The association of quizzers at St. Aloysius College has organised a University-level inter-collegiate quiz competition on January 7.

A session on Quizzing: Hobby and Profession, will also be held on the same day, according to a press release. Spot entries will be allowed provided the participants bring their ID cards and a note from the principal of the respective colleges, the release added.

Denies charge

SIRSI Dec. 28. The Janata Dal (Secular) president and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, today denied that he was acting like a dictator.

Addressing office bearers and workers of the district unit of the party here, Mr. Deve Gowda said that there was no dearth of leaders in the party but there was a problem of integrity among party workers.

The Minister for Small Savings, Basavaraj Horatti, the Janata Dal (S) leader Mahima Patel and the party's State unit spokesman, Thippanna, spoke on the occasion.

The Janata Dal (S) district unit president, Kamalakar Gokarna, the State unit secretary, Prabhakar Rane, Gopal Kanade, the Taluk unit president, Narayan Naik, the district Ryot Morcha leader Umesh Hegde Unehalli were present.

Dies of burns

MANGALORE DEC. 28. A woman, who was admitted to the government Wenlock hospital on Sunday with burns, died of injuries on Monday.

Police said that Yashoda (26) of Neerumarga allegedly set herself ablaze after pouring kerosene on her.

According to police, the woman was mentally ill. The Mangalore Rural Police have registered a case.

Volunteers' team for Nagapattinam

MYSORE DEC. 28. Members of the World Environmental Service Organisation (WESO) will offer voluntary services in the tsunami-hit areas of Tamil Nadu.

A team will leave Mysore on Wednesday and return on January 2. It will concentrate on Nagapattinam.

A press release says that individuals or volunteers from organisations interested in rendering voluntary service may join the team.

Drowned

MANGALORE DEC. 28. A man drowned while taking bath in a tank at Ilanthila in Uppinangady Police Station limits on Sunday.

The police gave his name as Raghava (30).

In another incident at Tekkaru in the same police station limits, Raghavendra Nayak (19) drowned in the Nethravati while taking bath on Saturday.

`Priority to teachers'

SIRSI Dec. 28. The Minister for Small Savings, Basavarj Horatti, today said that he would give priority to the problems faced by teachers.

Addressing presspersons here, he said that he had been representing the teaching fraternity for the past 25 years and knew their problems well.

There are 16 science parks in the State but they are maintained badly, he said. The science park at Belgaum was an exception.

There are 25,000 small savings agents in the State. They have not been getting their commission regularly Mr. Horatti said and assured that he would take action in this regard.
