THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 28. The official toll in the State in the tsunami catastrophe stood at 157 at 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, told press persons that 123 deaths had occurred in Kollam district, 29 in Alappuzha, four in Ernakulam and one in Kannur. There were about 700 injured persons in the hospitals now. Mr. Chandy said there was a warning from the Meteorological Department on the possibility of more waves from tsunami hitting the coast last night. He said the families in relief camps had been given Rs. 1,000 each for contingency needs. Mr. Chandy said the Opposition parties had demanded that the victims of the tragedy should be given more assistance. As of now, the next of kin of the dead fishermen would get Rs. 2 lakhs, including insurance amount.
