GULBARGA, DEC. 28. Gulbarga University will confer honorary doctorates to five eminent personalities from different fields in recognition of their services to society. The doctorates will be awarded as part of the university's Silver Jubilee Celebrations at the 23rd annual convocation on December 30. V.B. Coutinho, Vice-Chancellor of the university told presspersons here today that the Governor and Chancellor of the university, T.N. Chaturvedi, had approved the names of the Supreme Court Judge Shivaraj Patil; noted physician and reputed medical teacher P.S. Shankar; freedom fighter and educationist V.P. Deolugoankar; writer Shantharasa; and Hindustani vocalist Manikrao Raichurkar, for the honorary doctorates. The convocation will be held at a specially laid pandal at the open-air stadium on the university campus. The pandal will have a seating capacity of more than 4000. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, R.C. Lahoti, will deliver the convocation address. Mr. Chaturvedi will preside over the convocation and present gold medals and cash prizes and award degrees to the graduates and post-graduates. He will also award Ph.D. degrees to meritorious scholars. The Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, who is also the pro-Chancellor of the university, will participate in the convocation, he said.
