Death toll in Asia 55,000

BANDA ACEH (INDONESIA), DEC. 28. Logistical problems hampered a massive humanitarian relief operation today along Asia's devastated shores as the death toll from the tsunami surged past 55,000.

With the scale of the catastrophe rapidly unfolding, the confirmed number of dead in eight countries shot up to 55,335 and looks set to go even higher.

Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India were the hardest hit. Indonesia accounted for half the casualties, with over 27,000 dead, while over 17,500 died in Sri Lanka. In Thailand, more than 1,500 were killed.

In Geneva, the World Health Organisation today warned that disease in the aftermath of the disaster could kill as many people as the deadly waves and earthquake have. — AFP, AP

A UNI report from New Delhi said that another earthquake, measuring five on the Richter scale, rocked the Great Nicobar islands at 6.37 tonight.
