Cabinet committee to meet soon

By Our Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE, DEC. 28 . The Cabinet Committee on Natural Calamities will soon meet to take stock of the situation after the Tsunami that struck the coastal areas on Sunday, the Union Minister for Environment, A. Raja, said today.

The Committee will consider setting up a mechanism to predict natural calamities so as to help the authorities take precautionary measures, he said.

Mr Raja, a member of the Cabinet Committee, was here to inspect the affected areas at Thalanguda today. The Union Ministers of State, K. Venkatapathy and Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, and the MLA, Ela.Pugalendi, accompanied him.

Later, Mr. Raja told presspersons that the committee would study the pattern of the Tsunami and evolve a formula to tackle it in future.

The affected fishermen said it would take years for them to get fully rehabilitated. Another challenge was to check any possible outbreak of epidemics, as many bodies lay buried under debris and were rotting in the coastal villages.

Mr. Raja told Mr. Venkatapathy to requisition the services of the Indian Medical Association. Relief work was yet to fully reach the needy, he said and asked the Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, to gear up the machinery.
