By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, DEC. 28. The working president of the Haryana unit of the Congress, Randeep Singh Surjewala, today alleged that complete anarchy was the order of the day in Haryana as the law and order machinery had broken down irreparably.

"Protectors of the law have become its violators. Organised gangs of criminals operate in Haryana under the active protection of the Indian National Lok Dal government led by Om Prakash Chautala," he charged in a statement here.

Alleging that jails had become protection shelter for organised crime syndicate with established links to inter-State gangs and international connections, Mr. Surjewala said the entire police machinery in the State had been "Lokdalised" to carry out the personal agenda, whims and settling the personal rivalries of the powers that are".

Mr. Surjewala alleged that in the run-up to the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, numerous criminals were forcibly directed to be released on parole to use them for booth capturing, issuing threats and other such nefarious activities.

He asserted that the Congress was committed to cleansing Haryana's civil society by exposing and erasing the nexus of organised mafia with politicians of the day. "We will reach out and punish the guilty, howsoever high or well placed they may be. We warn the police officials entrusted with the protection of law and order to wake up and act to curb this menace, otherwise they will have to face consequences," he added.
