MYSORE, DEC. 28. A family of six persons hailing from Mandya is among the thousands washed away by the tsunami in Chennai's Marina Beach area. The Junior Engineer of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd., Nagaraju, 40, hailing from D Halasahalli village in Mandya's Malavalli taluk, his wife, Lalitha, 35, son Madankumar, 11, daughter Arpitha, 9, mother Gowramma, 60, and sister-in-law Prema are the dead along with Nagaraju's colleague, Shivakumar, 40, and the latter's wife, Jyothi, 30. Shivakumar and Jyothi hailing from H.D. Kote in Mysore district joined Nagaraju's family on a year-end tour to Chennai. All of them reached Bangalore from where they hired a vehicle on December 24 before checking into a resort near Marina beach in Chennai. The victims are believed to have gone on a stroll along the beach on Sunday morning to witness the sunrise, leaving behind the vehicle driver and a boy Harsha. All the bodies except that of Arpitha have been recovered.
Politician killed
A politician from Nanjangud, who contested the previous Assembly election on the Janata Party ticket, is among the victims of the tsunami in Velankanni in Nagapattinam. According to delayed reports reaching here, Nandini Gowda, 35, daughter of Ramachandre Gowda of Devarasanahalli in Nanjangud taluk, was washed away from the seashore adjoining the shrine of Our Lady of Velankanni in Nagapattinam on Sunday morning. Her husband, Thimme Gowda, who was inside the church, survived. Nandini Gowda and her husband left Mysore for Pondicherry on December 22. They were in Velankanni on Sunday morning. According to sources, the body of Nandini Gowda was brought to Nanjangud today and the last rites were performed at Devarasanahalli. Another woman from Nanjangud's Basavangudi area, Kempadevamma, 50, who was in Chennai, is also believed to have died in the devastation caused by the tsunami.
Missing
A family of seven persons from Metagalli on the outskirts of Mysore, who were in Velankanni in Nagapattinam, are reported missing. According to sources, the family comprising three children, their parents and grandparents left for Velankanni on a pilgrimage. But their whereabouts are not known since Sunday morning when the tsunami hit the southern coastal, claiming thousands of lives.
