Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, DEC. 28. The Dakshina Kannada district administration will organise a "jatha" for collection of relief in Mangalore on December 31 to help the people affected by tsunami in Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The "jatha" will be led by the Deputy Commissioner. A meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, Arvind Shrivastava, today decided that it was better to motivate people to donate cash and bank instruments instead of clothes and other material.
Money preferred
Mr. Shrivastava said that it had been the past experience of relief operations for Orissa cyclone and Gujarat earthquake victims that materials such as clothes, medicine, blankets and other food items were either not used or did not reach the people in good condition. He said money was the safest and fast relief material and things could be bought for the relief operations by the district administration of the respective areas. Blasius M D'Souza, MLC, suggested that collection boxes be kept in Deputy Commissioner's office and at taluk offices. He wanted the district administration to hold taluk level rallies. Mr. Shrivastava said that he would ask the district officers to motivate various associations to contribute to the Chief Minister's Tsunami Relief fund. He directed the lead district bank manager to direct the banks to organise collection of contributions in rural areas and deposit it in the centralised account at Vijaya Bank. Mr. Shrivastava said that collection boxes should also be placed in various temples. The meeting cleared January 25 as the cut off date for collection of relief.
Collection begins
Various organisations have started collecting money and relief materials for tsunami-affected people . The Bharat Seva Dal and the Dakshina Kananda District Kannada Sahitya Parishat today opened a fund office at Kodialbail and have appealed to the people to contribute.
