A road dug up and left without restoration at Turner's choultry on the main road near Suryabagh.
VISAKHAPATNAM, DEC. 28. Roads are being dug up, right, left and centre. If it is for laying the Godavari water pipeline work in one area, it is the underground drainage in some other areas. The digging is taking place on the arterial roads, too. One hardly knows where the minefield of a crater is and where the road is good. As vehicles motor down from Asilmetta to Dwarakanagar Junction in tearing hurry to clear the next traffic signal, right in the middle of the road is a crater.
Traffic diverted
Anyone driving a two-wheeler will be thrown off balance if he or she does not keep the eyes glued to the road ahead. A big chunk near Turner's Choultry on the arterial road from Jagadamba Junction to Suryabagh has also been dug up. There does not appear to be any restoration done. In Allipuram area, too, traffic is diverted as the Godavari pipeline work is going on. At several other places, roads have been dug up. All over the One Town area and on the Main Road, the underground drainage work has been taken up, says the Municipal Corporation's Chief Engineer, Panduranga Rao. For the underground drainage work, road has to be dug up in the middle so that connections can be given from either side, he explains. It usually takes six months time for completing the restoration of dug-up roads. But the patch is being watered and consolidated so as to restore it for traffic in three or four days spending more money. This step has been taken since traffic flow cannot be stopped on the main thoroughfares. Further work on permanent restoration will be taken up later. Putting up caution boards would obstruct traffic, Mr. Panduranga Rao feels. The underground drainage work, being executed at a cost of Rs. 20 crores, is expected to be completed by April 1.
