LONDON, DEC. 28. The teenage granddaughter of actor-director Richard Attenborough is among the dead in the Asian tidal wave disaster, a family friend said on Tuesday. Mr. Attenborough's daughter and her mother-in-law are missing, friend Diana Hawkins said in a statement released on behalf of the family. Ms. Hawkins said Mr. Attenborough's daughter, Jane, her husband, mother-in-law and children, Lucy, Alice and Sam, had been vacationing in the Thai resort of Phuket when the tsunami hit. Lucy, 14, died at the scene, while Alice, 17, is being treated in hospital. Mr. Attenborough's daughter and her mother-in-law, Jane Holland, both are missing. The two other members of the family were not injured. Ms. Hawkins said the Attenborough family "ask that the news media respect their need for privacy at this terrible time." Mr. Attenborough's directorial credits include `Cry Freedom', `Chaplin' and the Oscar-winning `Gandhi.' He has starred in scores of films, including `Brighton Rock', `The Great Escape', `Elizabeth' and `Jurassic Park.' He was ennobled as Lord Attenborough in 1993. There are 17 confirmed British deaths in the tidal wave disaster 10 in Thailand, four in Sri Lanka and three in the Maldives.
