COIMBATORE, DEC. 28 . The Coimbatore Corporation today sent 100 conservancy workers and 16 officials to Nagapattinam, the coastal district in the State worst hit by the tsunami, for relief operations. The Corporation said that the officials comprised two zonal sanitary officers, a doctor, two sanitary inspectors, six conservancy supervisors and two field assistants. They left in two buses of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. The Collector, S. Kosalaraman, the Mayor, T. Malaravan and the Corporation Commissioner, Anil Meshram, were present when the team left. The Corporation also despatched two tipper lorries and other conservancy equipment. The team also took with it a substantial stock of bleaching powder and disinfectant. The entire expenses of the team in Nagapattinam would be met by the Corporation. Two members of the Shenbagam, a women's self-help group at Jothipuram near Periyanaickenpalayam, 20 km north of the city, joined the team with 2,100 food packets they prepared. To mourn the victims, hotels and various organisations in the city have decided to either scale down New Year eve celebrations or cancel them. A release from the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association said that it had cancelled the New Year celebrations planned for December 31.
