HYDERABAD, DEC.28. The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) will send teams of seismologists to the tsunami-battered coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to study the phenomenon. Since this was the first time that tsunamis triggered by an earthquake had lashed the coastal areas in the country, the NGRI teams would visit the affected places and interact with "eye witnesses" for a first-hand account, it's director, V. P. Dimri, told The Hindu here today. The NGRI would also establish on-line connectivity between the seismological observatory here and its three seismological stations located at Dharwar (Karnataka), Kothagudem and Cuddapah (Andhra Pradesh).
Website planned
The Institute would soon launch a dynamic website which would provide regular updates on seismic activity of five magnitude and above in the country and less than three in Andhra Pardesh. He said the Sunday's earthquake in the Sumatra island had occurred when the Burmese plate, lying above the Indian plate, moved 15 metres upwards due to the continental drift. The Andaman and Nicobar islands which were along the "faultline" of the Indian plate had experienced about 46 till Tuesday evening, averaging a magnitude of five. However, the magnitude of the aftershocks was declining gradually and the latest reports indicated they were in the region of four.
