KOCHI, DEC. 28. The Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil, has requested that people donate generously to those affected by Sunday's tsunami. Donations should be sent to the `kacheri' of the Archdiocese. It will be distributed through Caritas to the needy. The Muslim Educational Society (MES) has sought a day's wages from people to be sent to those affected by the calamity. The Ernakulam District Residents' Association's apex council called upon all member associations to help the people in distress. The YMCA started collecting clothes and medicines to be sent to the affected areas. For details, contact Ph: 2383789, 2342585, 2577516. The All Kerala Public Health Nurses Association, All Kerala Private College Teachers Association, Bank Employees Federation of India, Hind Mazdoor Sabha and National Safety Council urged its members to donate a day's wages for the purpose. The Torture Prevention Centre, India, promised to send medical aid to the people. The CPI(ML) Red Flag sought measures to end theft in the affected areas. There were reports that thefts were happening in houses of people who had fled to safer areas. The Ernakulam Merchants Union alleged that some Government officials were harassing merchants under the guise of collecting materials to help the people in distress.
