Rehabilitation work continues

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, DEC. 28. Thousands of people evacuated from the coastline of Kochi in the wake of Sunday's tsunami attack were given food and medicine at the 38 relief camps in the district today. The district administration mobilised its machinery to meet the situation on a war footing.

Review meeting

A high-level meeting of civic officials held here reviewed the measures taken to provide relief to the victims. All the Government departments took part in the rehabilitation efforts.

The district administration denied leave to its staff in the wake of the emergency. The District Collector, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, asked private hospitals in the city not to treat tsunami victims on a commercial basis.

Thirty relief camps were opened in Kochi taluk alone, taking care of more than 10,000 people. There are five camps in Paravur taluk and three in Kanayannur taluk. Each camp is headed by a deputy tahsildar.

Free ration

Free ration was supplied to the victims. Eight medical teams were constituted under the District Medical Officer to take care of the health needs of the victims. There were complaints of shortage of antibiotics in the medical camps.

While officials of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) ensured drinking water at all the camps, electricity officials worked round-the-clock to provide uninterrupted power supply. The Civil Supplies Department has been asked to ensure enough food supply and cooking gas at the camps. The Department of Public Works has been asked to make all roads leading to the affected areas motorable.

The Collector, the Additional District Magistrate and Revenue Divisional Officer were meeting almost every hour to review the progress of the relief work. Many voluntary organisations, including the merchant communities, had come forward to provide succour for the victims.
