Parties, religious leaders rally for relief work

BANGALORE, DEC. 28. Political parties in the State and a few religious leaders have decided to provide relief to the people affected by the tsunami in Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt in Udupi has rushed to Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu to organise aid for people in distress.

The swamiji has appealed to the public to send donations in the name of Janata Kalyana Nidhi to the following banks in the city: Andhra Bank, Vidyapeetha Circle branch: A/c No.03133, Vijaya Bank, South End Road Branch: A/c No. 06054, and Syndicate Bank, Shoolay Circle Branch: A/c No.013560.

The Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (United) have organised padayatras in Bangalore on Wednesday urging people to donate money, clothes and medicines.

The Acting Chairman of the Legislative Council, V.R. Sudarshan, has announced that he will donate a month's salary to the tsunami relief fund. He has also appealed to members of the Legislative Council to extend similar assistance for rehabilitation of tsunami victims.

Padayatra

The BJP said in a press release today that it is the duty of people to respond to the woes of those affected by one of the worst natural disasters. The National General Secretary of the party Ananth Kumar and the State unit President, Jagadish Shettar, will meet traders and businessmen on Kempe Gowda Road, Chickpet, Gandhi Nagar, Cottonpet, Avenue Road, and B.V. Krishna Iyengar Road and urge them to donate to the fund. The release said that the padayatra will start at 11 a.m. from State Bank of Mysore Circle.

Mr. Shettar has appealed to all BJP MPs and legislators from the State to donate a month's salary to the relief fund and take interest in collecting donations from their friends and relatives. The Leader of the Opposition in the Legisaltive Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa, has also made a similar appeal.

Responsibility of KPCC

In a press release here today, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, B. Janaradhana Poojary, said that the All India Congress Committee has entrusted the responsibility of providing relief to people in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the KPCC and work had already been taken up under the leadership of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh. Mr. Poojary, who said that he would donate a month's salary as well as an extra Rs. 25,000, has requested Congress MPs and legislators to donate a month's salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Information centres

He said that a meeting of the KPCC will be held on December 30. The Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada District Congress Committees had been made relief committees for taking up rehabilitation work in the respective areas. He also said that information centres had been set up in those districts.

The Janata Dal (United) said here in a press release today that the party would undertake a padayatra in Bangalore on Wednesday to urge people to donate generously for relief work for people affected in the tsunami-hit areas in the country.

The President of the State unit of the Jamaat-E-Islami Hind, Ibrahim Sayeed, has expressed sorrow over the death of people caused by the tidal waves in Tamil Nadu, the Andaman Nicobar Islands, and Andhra Pradesh.

He has urged people to donate money for relief works in the affected areas.
