BANGALORE, DEC. 28. Imagine getting an email saying that there will be a tremor measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale in northern Kerala and eastern Karnataka at 7 a.m. on Wednesday. On reading the email, Manoj, who works with Cable & Wireless here, got worried. "I found that most of my colleagues had got similar emails," Mr. Manoj told The Hindu on Tuesday. He was trying to check if there was some substance in the rumour. The emails had got him and his colleagues into a tizzy, he said. When the India Meteorology Centre was contacted, officials asked who was creating this scare. "We have got at least 25 calls on this topic today. And every caller has the same story to tell that there will be a quake tomorrow. We have not said anything about such a quake and we have no information on the matter. Why do people spread such rumours," they asked. Every time a calamity occurs, there are rumours of more disasters in store. Bangalore was rife with stories of impending tremors following the Bhuj earthquake of 2001. A predicted quake even coincided with a Bangalore Agenda Task Force seminar, which was being held at the National Institute of Advanced Studies. On hearing the rumour, the organisers requested the participants not to panic and made them file out of the auditorium till the predicted hour passed. Nothing happened though, and the seminar continued after the break.
